Click tracking

EventsIQ is a lead capture and lead routing platform for advertisers. Its click tracker records each paid click on the advertiser's behalf, then sends the visitor straight to the advertiser's landing page, so every lead can be tied back to the ad, ad group and keyword that produced it. Every redirect is transparent: the destination is visible in the link itself, and the tracker goes exactly there.

What it is

What it does

An advertiser creates a campaign in EventsIQ and gets a tracking link for it. When someone clicks the ad:

  1. The tracker records the click and gives it a unique click id.
  2. It redirects the visitor to the landing page with a single HTTP 302 response. There are no other hops.
  3. When the visitor later becomes a lead, the lead carries that click id, so the advertiser sees which ad and keyword it came from and can report the conversion back to the ad network.

Tracking domains

  • eventsiq.io and its subdomains are operated by us. Each advertiser can claim a subdomain of their own, such as acme.eventsiq.io, which works with any landing page.
  • An advertiser can instead point a subdomain of their own website at us with a CNAME record to redirect.eventsiq.io. Following Google's guidelines, we recommend this only when the landing page is on the same website, for example track.acme-solar.com for pages on acme-solar.com.
  • Every tracking domain is served over HTTPS only, with certificates issued automatically.

How a click is handled

The destination parameter

Our transparency parameter is eiq_url. When a tracking link carries it, the tracker redirects to exactly that URL, on every tracking link and every tracking domain, instead of to any destination configured in EventsIQ. Rules, traffic splits and saved landing pages are never applied to a link that carries eiq_url.

  • The value is checked against the landing pages of the campaign the link belongs to. A destination on any other host is refused with an HTTP 404, so the tracker cannot be used as an open redirect.
  • Google's parallel tracking address (https://google.com/asnc/...), which Google puts in place of the Final URL when it loads the tracking link in the background, is followed exactly and unchanged.
  • Redirects are plain HTTP 302 responses. No meta refresh or JavaScript redirect is used.

Parameters we add

On a transparent redirect the tracker adds only its own two parameters to the destination, and never adds or changes anyone else's:

  • eiq_click: the click id the tracker issued.
  • eiq_campaign: the EventsIQ campaign the click belongs to.

Parameters that belong to the advertiser or to Google, such as UTM tags or gclid, reach the landing page only because they are already part of the Final URL or the Final URL suffix.

Parallel tracking

The tracker is compatible with Google Ads parallel tracking. With parallel tracking, the visitor goes straight to the Final URL while the browser requests the tracking link in the background. The tracker accepts that background request, records the click and answers it, and the landing page joins the lead to the click by Google's click id. When parallel tracking is off, the same link records the click and redirects the visitor to the Final URL through the destination parameter.

Privacy

What a click records

The data recorded on a click, how long it is kept and who can see it are set out in our privacy policy. Click data belongs to the advertiser whose link was clicked and is used only to attribute their leads and report their results.
